$10 Eagles on Parade - The Best Finds from the New Orleans Mint

We’re excited to present you with a collection of rare gold coins from the New Orleans Mint. These coins offer numerous reasons to invest and collect due to its value and rarity. Within the MS61 grade, only three $10 Eagles from the Mint, for example, are exclusively available to you!

Douglas Winter, our rare U.S. gold coin expert has just returned from his annual trip to the Long Beach Coin Expo. This coin show is the largest of its kind on the west coast and this year did not disappoint. Thanks to your feedback and popular demand, we went to this show on a mission to find interesting, rare, and cost-effective pre-1933 gold coins for you. Not only did we accomplish our mission, but we were incredibly fortunate to find seven coins from the New Orleans Mint that were produced during its rarest ten-year span of production!

History of the New Orleans Mint

The New Orleans Mint was established in 1835 by Andrew Jackson, citing a need to increase coin production. Due to the consistent shortfalls of the Philadelphia Mint, the only existing national Mint at the time, the New Orleans Mint, was established because of its strategic location along the Mississippi River and its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.

Production of U.S. gold coins began in 1838 and continued until 1861, when Louisiana officially seceded from the United States. As an interesting piece of history, the Confederacy used the New Orleans Mint for its own coin production in the early days of the Civil War. After the bullion used to produce coins ran out, the Mint was used to house Confederate troops. After the war, the Mint remained unused throughout the reconstruction era of the early 1870s.

After closing in 1861, the New Orleans Mint reopened for minting in 1879. During this year, they struck silver dollars, Eagles ($10 gold), and Double Eagles ($20 gold). Between 1879 and 1906, only 15 issues of $10 eagles were made at the New Orleans Mint. These range from very rare to moderately scarce, and today the ‘With Motto’ New Orleans eagles are avidly collected by date set with many collectors working on complete sets.

New Orleans coins issued from 1892 to 1906 are especially popular among collectors because they are available in higher grades (MS61 to MS63) within a reasonable price range.

We’re excited to offer a rare group of New Orleans Eagles in uncirculated grades. This selection of coins is hard to come by since many of these coins were recently repatriated from European banks where they remained untouched in vaults for many decades.

Feb17 1984O P61 F
1894-O $10.00 PCGS MS61
Price: $1,499*

The 1894-O $10 Eagle exhibits a low mintage of 107,000. 577 of the initial 107,000 have been graded by PCGS and only 68 are considered finer. This coin is a perfect example of a tougher date to find, yet is still reasonably priced. Three are available and each coin was hand-selected for its natural color and great luster.

Feb17 1894O P61 CAC F
1894-O $10.00 PCGS MS61 CAC Approved
Price: $1,599*

Here we have another 1894-O $10 Eagle. This particular coin is the same date and grade as the previous listing, but has also received CAC approval. CAC is a “best-of-the-best” designation given to graded coins and typically leads to higher resale value and more demand from collectors. This coin is very high-end for the date and grade with its rich orange-gold color. In our opinion, this coin is as nice as some in MS62, which are worth about $2,400 each.

Feb17 1895O P63 F
1895-O $10.00 PCGS MS62+
Call for Price and Availability!

The 1895-O $10 Eagle has an initial mintage of 98,000. Of the initial mintage, 647 have been graded by PCGS. Only four have been graded MS62+ by PCGS and 25 coins have been graded finer by PCGS. In our opinion, this is a top 25 coin because of the original luster and detail. We feel this coin is very close to an MS63, and in that grade the coin is worth $8,000 or more.

Feb17 1895O P63 F
1895-O $10.00 PCGS MS63
Call for Price and Availability!

After 30 years of grading, PCGS still has yet to grade an 1895-O Eagle higher than MS63. This coin tied for the finest-known and is an excellent value with the most recent auction record (in 2013) at a strong $7,931.

Feb17 1899O P61 F
1899-O $10.00 PCGS MS61
Call for Price and Availability!

With a mintage of 37,047 and an overall PCGS population of just 257 coins, the 1899-O is the rarest date in the New Orleans Eagle series struck after 1883. Only 68 have been graded MS61 by PCGS. The 1899-O is almost never seen above MS62 to MS63 grades.

Feb17 1903O N61Plus F
1903-O $10.00 NGC MS61+ CAC Approved
Call for Price and Availability!

The 1903-O $10 has an initial mintage of 112,771 and is slightly more common than some of the other coins we are offering. However, we feel this coin is one of the best opportunities you can invest in and is bright and frosty with rich color and reasonably few marks. This is exceptional for an MS61+ and is reflected with its CAC approval.

Feb17 1904O N61Plus F
1904-O $10.00 NGC MS61+ CAC Approved
Call for Price and Availability!

Like the 1903-O, we feel this coin is significantly undervalued for its current condition. With a mintage of 108,950, an existing PCGS population of less than 1,000 total coins, and CAC approval, this coin would make a great companion piece to the 1903-O. These coins were acquired from the same collector as the 1903-O, so it’s possible these coins have been together for many years.

Considering these coins were produced during the rarest ten-year span of production at the New Orleans Mint, the rarity and value of these coins are outstanding. Take advantage of this opportunity and own a piece of history with these $10 Eagles.
