These Iconic Australian Coins Welcome in a New Year

Straight from “Down Under,” one of the first government minted coins of 2018 has hopped on the scene! The new gold and silver Australian Kangaroo coins feature Australia’s most iconic marsupial and are easily some of the most anticipated coins of the new year.

2018 1-ounce Gold Australian KangarooThe 2018 Kangaroo was just released by The Perth Mint this week, and as the one of the first sovereign coins to be issued for 2018, investors have been eager to get their hands on it! Originally released as a gold coin, the Kangaroo grew so popular that the Mint released another in silver in 2015—and, just this year, one in platinum.

The gold and silver Kangaroos both feature Ian Rank-Broadley’s regal effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the coin obverse with a depiction of Australia’s beloved kangaroo on the reverse.

Every year since 1989, The Perth Mint has released a new design for the reverse of the gold bullion coin, each with a slight variation on the classic bounding kangaroo. The 2018 issue features two kangaroos leaping through the wilderness with the sun shining overhead and hills in the background. These coins have a fineness of .9999 pure gold and are available in full 1-ounce coins, as well as fractional and kilo sizes.

Relatively new on the scene, silver Kangaroos are in their third year of issue and are minted from .9999 pure silver. Unlike the gold Kangaroo, these coins do not feature yearly design changes. However, due to their exceptional purity, both coins are accepted for purchase in a precious metals IRA.

Security and authentication is a top priority at The Perth Mint. Each gold, silver, and platinum Kangaroo is mint-marked with the letter “P” (for The Perth Mint) and features a unique micro-engraved letter that can only be detected through a magnifying glass. Another security feature added to the silver Kangaroo in 2016 and the platinum Kangaroo in 2018, is engraved radial lines. These additional security measures make it difficult for counterfeiters to reproduce these coins—and easier to detect the fakes.
