Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Own the 2016 Platinum American Eagle

It’s always important news in the coin and bullion marketplace when the United States Mint releases a new coin. However, when the Mint announced it would bring back the one-ounce bullion edition Platinum American Eagle, investors and collectors were particularly excited. This is one of the most eagerly-anticipated coin releases in recent memory.

The Platinum American Eagle program was first launched in 1997, but production was curtailed after 2008. Since then, very few American Platinum Eagles have been released by the U.S. Mint; they’re in high demand and scarce supply.

In a nutshell, there are five key reasons why you should own the 2016 Platinum American Eagle:

  1. This is only the second BU Platinum Eagle issued in seven years. When the Platinum American Eagle was introduced in 1997, the U.S. Mint issued the coin in four denominations: 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce. The Mint also struck the coin in two formats: Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof. Then in 2009, production was limited to just the 1-ounce coin in Proof. A tiny spurt (16,900 pieces to be exact) of 2014 1 ounce BU coins were released, but otherwise, the Mint hasn’t struck a BU Platinum Eagle since 2008. This has resulted in significant pent-up demand. In fact, just recently, 1-ounce Platinum Eagles routinely traded for $175-$250 per coin over spot – and rarely could one find more than a few dozen coins in one place.
  2. Platinum is rarer than gold, yet currently sells for less. Not only do we strongly believe in this new Platinum Eagle, but the metal itself represents an outstanding value. The global supply of platinum is estimated to be 1/10th that of gold. In fact, the entire world’s supply of platinum could very well fit into your living room. Despite being significantly less available, platinum is currently selling for a discount compared to gold. This is highly unusual; platinum often sells for a premium (and a significant one at that) compared to gold. For example, in 2008, platinum surged past $2,000 per ounce, while gold was under $1,000 per ounce.
  3. The current price of platinum is well below its peak. Currently, platinum is hovering in the $1,075-$1,100 range. This is roughly half of its peak in 2008 and well below its average trading range from 2010-2015. Being a scarcer metal – and one with many industrial applications – it is especially prone to supply shocks. In 2008, for instance, the price of platinum gained by an incredible $400-$500 per ounce in under 30 days. Even in the strongest gold rallies, the yellow metal has never staged such a wild and quick increase.
  4. The Platinum Eagle appeals to both investors and collectors. The Platinum American Eagle isn’t just a bullion product; it’s become a popular numismatic item too. Collectors are drawn to the coin for its beautiful design and tiny mintages. Numismatists also like the fact that the Platinum Eagle series is a short, easy-to-complete set within most peoples’ budgets. Furthermore, the 1-ounce Platinum Eagle has the unique distinction of being the only American coin ever issued with a $100 face value. It’s worth mentioning that the United States never issued a circulating platinum coin, thus making the Eagle an unusual and intriguing item.
  5. The 2016 Proof Platinum Eagle was a wild success. As mentioned previously, the U.S. Mint has issued Platinum Eagles in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof formats. Several weeks ago, 2016 Proof 1-ounce Platinum Eagles were released - selling out in an hour! In a blink of an eye, the coin’s maximum mintage of 10,000 pieces was spoken for. This enthusiasm could very well (and likely will) spill over to the Brilliant Uncirculated version.

Quantity is very limited on the 2016 Platinum American Eagles, so now is the time to pre-order your coins while you still can. They are expected to sell out with the U.S. Mint shortly after release.
