U.S. Mint Release the Next Coin of 2018: The Platinum American Eagle

The next issue of the immensely popular American Eagle series has officially been announced—introducing the 2018 platinum American Eagle.

The platinum American Eagle is one of the world’s most highly demanded platinum products and is expected to sell out quickly. The U.S. Mint has not released official mintage figures for new platinum Eagle, but in the past years, these figures have been significantly lower than their gold and silver counterparts and typically sell out within just a few days. In 2016, for example, the Mint only produced 20,000 1-ounce platinum American Eagles—in contrast to the 817,500 and over 37 million 1-ounce gold and silver Eagles sold, respectively.

With platinum and palladium prices at the closest levels they’ve been since September, now could be a great opportunity to invest in platinum while it’s still cheap compared to palladium. Whereas palladium’s performance dominated all other commodities last year—its prices surpassing those of platinum for the first time in 16 years—the tables now seem to have turned. As of yet, platinum is the top performing precious metal, up close to 3% year-to-date as automakers switch back to platinum to take advantage of its now lower costs. Palladium, on the other hand, is down roughly 8% on the year.

Because of the platinum American Eagle’s limited production figures, these coins are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The U.S. Mint has yet to release these new coins; however, they are expected to ship by the end of February.
