U.S. Mint Welcomes a New Metal to the American Eagle Program

For the first time in 20 years, the U.S. Mint will be releasing a new American Eagle bullion coin—the 2017 1-ounce palladium American Eagle. This is the first palladium coin to be released by the U.S. Mint in its 225-year history and, like other American Eagle coins, will only be available for purchase through your preferred dealer.

For the first 200 years of its history, the U.S. Mint only produced copper, nickel, silver, and gold coins, and when it introduced the platinum American Eagle in 1997, demand for the new coin was significant!

The new 2017 palladium Eagle is an enormous undertaking, seven years in the making! Congress first authorized production of the coin in 2010 when they passed the American Palladium Eagle Bullion Coin Act of 2011, and for years the design, denomination, and release date have been widely speculated.

Each 1-ounce coin contains .9995 fine palladium and has a face value of $25. The obverse of the new Eagle will be adapted from Adolph A. Weinman’s “Winged Liberty” design featured on the 1916 Mercury dime, and the reverse will honor Weinman’s 1907 American Institute of Architects (AIA) gold medal design.

The U.S. Mint will only be issuing a limited number of 1-ounce palladium American Eagles, and, as the very first issue, this is an incredibly special coin to add to your investment portfolio. The U.S. Mint has not confirmed whether or not it will be minting more coins in the future at all, making this a unique investment. We estimate the Mint will produce significantly less than 100,000 coins—likely somewhere in the 10,000 to 25,000 range. We won’t know the final number, of course, until the dust settles.

Because this is a “first of its kind” release, the new Eagle is expected to sell incredibly fast, regardless of spot price change. This new release coincides with palladium’s outstanding year-to-date performance. The precious metal is the top performing commodity of the year, boasting an impressive 32% growth in 2017. In early September, palladium hit record highs, soaring to over $980 per ounce—it’s highest level since January 2001!
